The 1980's brought another first for women in male dominated industries. It brought the first woman in space. Although there were critics who felt she was chosen for the space shuttle journey because she was a woman, Robert Crippen, the Space Shuttle Challenger commander set the story straight; she was chosen because she was the best person for the job.
Orlando Hamcation - icom radio Flea Market and ARRL Southeast Division Convention on February 8th, 9th, and 10th, 2013, will be held at the Central Florida Fairgrounds on Colonial Drive [SR-50] just west of Downtown Orlando. Admission tickets are $12/person, with free parking on the fairgrounds. This is the big one in Florida, and is worth the drive over to Orlando. A lot of things had to go right at the right time to have a successful outcome to this incident. The accident victim wasn't alone. When Whiting came along the road to be waved over, he had the equipment to handle the communications to solve the problem. Someone was listening to a radio to answer Whitings call. Whiting had portable handheld radios to use for staying in contact.
A VHF icom marine radio, for instance, should be equipped on your boat should the need ever arise for you to get a hold of someone during an emergency. VHF icom marine radios are equipped with Digital Selective Calling (DSC), so it will be very easy to you to call the Coast Guard or other boaters close to your area. You can either have a traditional VHF radio installed on your boat, or buy a handheld one. It's totally up to you, all that matters is that you have some way of getting a hold of help in times of distress.
Getting to some missions when I'm not doing in-town comm duty. I don't drive so I have to rely on a team member to pick me up if they're going through the area. Once there, the hardest part is first steps towards mission organization. Once that's done though, and training kicks in, the searchers fall into line. It's like going to school and getting out for the summer. Over the summer you might forget a bit of what you learned, and your body is not back on the rigid schedule required of school, so the first week or two of returning can be quite an adjustment.

Fixed bridges span a waterway from one side to the other. On you chart, these bridge symbols form unbroken lines across the water. Find the vertical clearance of the bridge marked near the charted symbol.
From a safety standpoint, PURPLE is the color that ensures a successful cruising life, but I don't think the sailing community will ever leave pink and blue behind!
